About Top Knot
Our brushes use real boar bristle, which means we can't call TopKnot a fully vegan brand — and we'd rather be upfront about that than blur the line. What we can say clearly: no TopKnot product is tested on animals, and our boar bristles are ethically sourced through reputable, audited suppliers. We're always working to be as transparent as possible about where our materials come from, and we'll continue to share more as we do.
TopKnot is Australian owned and founded, products are consciously made, and designed to feel genuinely luxurious without the luxury price tag.
Where many brands ask customers to choose between style, performance or sustainability, TopKnot is built on the belief that they should never have to compromise.
Every product is designed to deliver:
- Salon-quality results
- Beautiful, timeless design
- Thoughtfully selected materials
- Long-lasting durability
- Everyday ease of use
- Exceptional value
This balance is what defines the TopKnot experience.
Depending on the brush, handles are made from sustainably sourced wood, or biodegradable composites. Bristles are natural boar or a combination of boar and nylon.
With proper care, a TopKnot hairbrushes can last for years. Our durable construction and quality materials are designed for long-lasting performance.
Not quite — and we'd rather explain why than overstate it. Pure wheatstraw can't be moulded into a stable, functional hairbrush on its own, so a 100% wheatstraw handle isn't technically possible with current manufacturing. Most brushes on the market that use wheatstraw sit around 10% of the material. We pushed our manufacturing partners further, landing on a 30% wheatstraw handle — well above the industry norm — without compromising on durability or water resistance. Our goal was never to claim perfection, just to make a genuinely better decision: a brush that holds up to daily use, resists water, and uses meaningfully less plastic than a standard handle.
Choosing the Right Hair Brush
TopKnot offers hair brushes for fine, thick, curly, wavy and colour-treated hair. Each brush is designed to detangle, smooth and add shine while protecting your hair. Check out out our Hair Quiz here to work out the best hair brush for your hair.
Our soft boar bristle hair brushes gently smooth and stimulate the scalp without tugging or breakage.
For thicker hair, we recommend the Gloss Boss, Black hair brush with firmer nylon pins and natural boar bristles to smooth with ease.
Our Curvy Detangler hair brush is ideal for wet hair, while the Gloss Boss boar and nylon mix brush helps define curls and reduce frizz on dry hair.
Hair Brush Care
Remove hair after each use and give your hair brush a deeper clean once a week, or more often if you regularly use styling products.
Use the TopKnot cleaning comb to remove hair and debris. Wash the bristles gently with mild shampoo and lukewarm water, avoid soaking the handle and allow the brush to dry bristle-side down.
Our Curvy Detangler is suitable for wet and dry hair. The curved shape means that the brush curves to the shape of the head, and the flexible nylon prongs, gently bend with the hair to avoid pulling, tugging and breakage.
Store your TopKnot hair brush in a clean, dry place and use the recycled cotton dust bag when travelling.
General Hair Questions
Yes. Daily brushing helps distribute natural oils, detangle strands and promote a healthy-looking scalp. We recommend brushing your hair for 5 minutes, twice a day.
Not when done correctly. Use the Curvy Detangler hairbrush on wet or damp strands, use a detangling spray first, and start from the ends and work upwards, using gentle strokes to avoid unnecessary stress on the hair.
Natural boar bristles help distribute oils and add shine, while nylon bristles are excellent for detangling. The best choice depends on your hair type and needs.
The secret to painless detangling is softening the knot before you brush. Start with a generous amount of conditioner, letting it sit for a moment on the affected area, then use a wide-tooth comb to gently work through the toughest part of the tangle first. Always start at the ends and work your way up, section by section, rather than pulling from the root — this takes the pressure off the scalp and stops small knots from becoming big ones. Once the worst of it has eased, finish with the Curvy Detangler to smooth everything through, gently and pain-free.
Prevention comes down to a few simple daily habits. Brushing consistently — ideally morning and night — stops small tangles building into stubborn knots over time. Swapping to a silk bonnet or silk pillowcase reduces the friction that causes knots to form while you sleep, and a good conditioner paired with a weekly hair mask keeps hair softer and easier to move through. If you're swimming in chlorine or salt water, apply a leave-in conditioner beforehand and rinse thoroughly as soon as you're out — both can dry hair out and make it more prone to tangling.
Oily roots paired with dry ends usually comes down to sebum building up at the scalp while the ends miss out on moisture. Start by understanding your hair type and porosity — our Hair Quiz is a good place to begin. A salt scrub over the scalp every so often helps clear away product and sebum build-up, and it's worth checking your shampoo and conditioner are genuinely suited to your hair type, since the wrong combination can make both ends of the problem worse. When conditioning, apply it to the ends only — never the roots, where it can weigh hair down and add to oil build-up. Finishing with a brush like Gloss Boss, which combines boar bristle with nylon prongs, morning and night, helps evenly distribute natural oils from root to tip — keeping roots fresher for longer and ends better nourished.
The easiest way is with our Hair Quiz a few quick questions to help you understand exactly what your hair needs.
For thick, brunette hair, Gloss Boss in Black is the perfect match. The black boar bristles blend seamlessly against darker hair, so all you see is the shine, not the brush.
For blonde or colour-treated hair, Gloss Boss in Blonde is the one to reach for. The lighter boar bristles blend naturally against blonde tones, and gentle, consistent brushing is especially kind to colour-treated hair that needs a little extra care.
